How to format a title page for a term paper.

This is probably a really basic question, but I'm a first-year and I'm already stressed. I have my first big term paper due, and I'm staring at a blank page before the first page, wondering what the title page is supposed to look like.

My professor's instructions just say "proper formatting," which is not helpful. Some of my friends are using APA, some are using MLA. I'm in an intro psych class, so I think it's APA? But the professor hasn't specified.

For APA, I know you need a running head, the title, your name, and the institution, all centered, right? But do you need a separate page number? And what about MLA? I thought MLA didn't even use a separate title page—you just put your name and info in the top left corner of the first page.

I don't want to lose points on something this stupid. Can someone just give me the quick and dirty rules for both? And more importantly, how do I know which one to use if the professor doesn't say? Is it usually based on the subject (psych = APA, english = MLA)?

Here's what I actually look for on title pages:
  1. Does it exist? (Some students forget entirely)
  2. Is the name on it? (You'd be surprised)
  3. Does the title vaguely match the paper?
  4. Is it readable?
That's literally it. I promise we're not sitting there with a ruler measuring margins.

BUT since you want to do it right: APA 7th doesn't require "Running head:" anymore (that was APA 6). Just the actual shortened title in all caps on the left. Page 1 on the right. Title centered in bold about a third down. Your name. School. Then course info if you want.

The fact that you're even asking this question means you'll be fine. The students who lose points are the ones who don't care enough to check. You clearly care, so you're already ahead.

Also – ask your professor! They'll appreciate the initiative. "Just to confirm, we're using APA 7th, right?" takes two seconds and shows you're paying attention. 🎓
